    DETERMINATION OF THE 129I IN PRIMARY COOLANT OF PWR

    Among the radioactive wastes generated from the nuclear power plant, a radioactive nuclide such as 129I is classified as a difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclide, owing to its low specific activity. Therefore, the establishment of an analytical procedure, including a chemical separation for 129I as a representative DTM, becomes essential.In this report, the adsorption and recovery rate were measured by adding 125I as a radio-isotopic tracer (t1/2 = 60.14 d) to the simulation sample, in order to measure the activity concentration of 129I in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant. The optimum condition for the maximum recovery yield of iodine on the anion exchange resins (AG1 x2, 50-100 mesh, Cl− form) was found to be at pH 7.In this report, the effect of the boron content in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant on the separation process of 129I was examined, as was the effect of 3H on the measurement of the activity of iodine. As a result, no influence of the boron content and of the simultaneous 3H presence was found with activity concentrations of 3H lower than 50 Bq/mL, and with a boron concentration of less than 2,000 μg/mL

    Fluoxetine Up-Regulates Bcl-xL Expression in Rat C6 Glioma Cells

    Objective To analyze both differentially expressed genes and the Bcl-xL protein expression after acute and chronic treatment with fluoxetine in rat C6 glioma cells. Methods C6 glioma cells were cultured for 24 h or 72 h after treatment with 10 mu M fluoxetine, and gene expression patterns were observed using microarray and qRT-PCR. Then, cells were cultured for 6 h, 24 h, 72 h or 96 h after treatment with 10 mu M fluoxetine, and the expression of Bd-xL protein was measured using western blot. Results As determined by microarray, treatment with fluoxetine for 24 h up-regulated 33 genes (including Bcl-xL and NCAM140) and down-regulated 7 genes (including cyclin G-associated kinase). Treatment with fluoxetine for 72 h up-regulated 53 genes (including Gs alpha and Bcl-xL) and down-regulated 77 genes (including Gai2 and annexin V). Based on the qRT-PCR results, there was an increase in Gsa mRNA and a decrease in G alpha i2 mRNA at 72 h in fluoxetine-treated cells as compared to control, a result that was consistent with microarray. We also observed an increase in Bcl-xL mRNA (both at 24 h and at 72 h) in fluoxetine-treated cells as compared to control, demonstrating a tendency to increase gradually. Bcl-xL protein expression increased as the duration of fluoxetine treatment increased. Conclusion These results suggest that chronic treatment with fluoxetine not only initiates the cAMP pathway through inducing Gsa expression but also induces Bcl-xL expression, thus inhibiting apoptosis.     Hepatogastric fistula caused by direct invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma after transarterial chemoembolization and radiotherapy

    A 63-year-old man with a history of hepatitis-B-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the left lateral portion of the liver received repeated transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and salvage radiotherapy. Two months after completing radiotherapy, he presented with dysphagia, epigastric pain, and a protruding abdominal mass. Computed tomography showed that the bulging mass was directly invading the adjacent stomach. Endoscopy revealed a fistula from the HCC invading the stomach. Although the size of the mass had decreased with the drainage through the fistula, and his symptoms had gradually improved, he died of cancer-related bleeding and hepatic failure. This represents a case in which an HCC invaded the stomach and caused a hepatogastric fistula after repeated TACE and salvage radiotherapy

    Prospective Validation of FibroTest in Comparison with Liver Stiffness for Predicting Liver Fibrosis in Asian Subjects with Chronic Hepatitis B

    Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and FibroTest (FT) are frequently used as non-invasive alternatives for fibrosis staging to liver biopsy. However, to date, diagnostic performances of Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, which consists of hyaluronic acid, aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type-III, and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1, have not been compared to those of LSM and FT in Asian chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.Between June 2010 and November 2011, we prospectively enrolled 170 CHB patients who underwent liver biopsies along with LSM, FT, and ELF. The Batts system was used to assess fibrosis stages.Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) to predict significant fibrosis (F≥2), advanced fibrosis (F≥3), and cirrhosis (F = 4) were 0.901, 0.860, and 0.862 for ELF, respectively; 0.937, 0.956, and 0.963 for LSM; and 0.896, 0.921, and 0.881 for FT. AUROCs to predict F≥2 were similar between each other, whereas LSM and FT had better AUROCs than ELF for predicting F≥3 (both p<0.05), and LSM predicted F4 more accurately than ELF (p<0.05). Optimized cutoffs of ELF to maximize sum of sensitivity and specificity were 8.5, 9.4, and 10.1 for F≥2, F≥3, and F = 4, respectively. Using suggested ELF, LSM and FT cutoffs to diagnose F1, F2, F3, and F4, 91 (53.5%), 117 (68.8%), and 110 (64.7%) patients, respectively, were correctly classified according to histological results.ELF demonstrated considerable diagnostic value in fibrosis staging in Asian CHB patients, especially in predicting F≥2.     A case of isolated metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma arising from the pelvic bone

    Reports of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without a primary liver tumor are rare. Here we present a case of isolated HCC that had metastasized to the pelvic bone without a primary focus. A 73-year-old man presented with severe back and right-leg pain. Radiological examinations, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed a huge mass on the pelvic bone (13×10 cm). He underwent an incisional biopsy, and the results of the subsequent histological examination were consistent with metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. The tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), hepatocyte paraffin 1, and glypican-3, and negative for CD56, chromogranin A, and synaptophysin on immunohistochemical staining. Examination of the liver by CT, MRI, positron-emission tomography scan, and angiography produced no evidence of a primary tumor. Radiotherapy and transarterial chemoembolization were performed on the pelvic bone, followed by systemic chemotherapy. These combination treatments resulted in tumor regression with necrotic changes. However, multiple lung metastases developed 1 year after the treatment, and the patient was treated with additional systemic chemotherapy

    Application of airborne hyperspectral imagery to retrieve spatiotemporal CDOM distribution using machine learning in a reservoir

    Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in inland waters is used as a proxy to estimate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and may be a key indicator of water quality and nutrient enrichment. CDOM is optically active fraction of DOC so that remote sensing techniques can remotely monitor CDOM with wide spatial coverage. However, to effectively retrieve CDOM using optical algorithms, it may be critical to select the absorption co-efficient at an appropriate wavelength as an output variable and to optimize input reflectance wavelengths. In this study, we constructed a CDOM retrieval model using airborne hyperspectral reflectance data and a machine learning model such as random forest. We evaluated the best combination of input wavelength bands and the CDOM absorption coefficient at various wavelengths. Seven sampling events for airborne hyperspectral imagery and CDOM absorption coefficient data from 350 nm to 440 nm over two years (2016-2017) were used, and the collected data helped train and validate the random forest model in a freshwater reservoir. An absorption co-efficient of 355 nm was selected to best represent the CDOM concentration. The random forest exhibited the best performance for CDOM estimation with an R2 of 0.85, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.77, and percent bias of 3.88, by using a combination of three reflectance bands: 475, 497, and 660 nm. The results show that our model can be utilized to construct a CDOM retrieving algorithm and evaluate its spatiotemporal variation across a reservoir
